STRESS:THE EFFECT ON BODY SYSTEMS


There are very real effects of stress on body and mind that should help you see the importance of reducing the stress in your life. As we all know, the body as a whole is made up of eleven body systems. Each system is important to the body and they were all designed to work together as one unit. The effects of stress on body and mind are more evident than ever. Let’s see the effect of stress on some major systems of our body.

Nervous System:
This system includes the brain, spinal cord, and all the other nerves running through the rest of the body. The nervous system ensures that the communications between all systems are good. It is also responsible for recognizing and coordinating the body’s response to internal and external changes.
Long term effects of stress on CNS include: Anxiety, Panic attacks, Depression, Insomnia (Sleep problem) etc.

Cardiovascular System:
This system includes the heart and the blood vessels and it’s job is to keep the body alive by circulating blood through the body.
Short term effect: Stress causes irregular heartbeat, chest pain, and constriction of blood vessels.
Long term effects: High blood pressure, Heart attack, stroke etc.

Digestive System:
This system includes mouth, Intestines, stomach, Gall bladder, liver, pancreas, and rectum. This system has a job to break down and digest food and to take all the nutrients required for the body.
Short term effects: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, appetite abnormalities.
Long term effects: stomach ulcers, IBD (irritable bowel disease), colitis, Acid Reflux etc
Immune System:
This system includes the thymus gland, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, liver, and appendix.  Stress causes low immunity opening the door to sickness like colds, flu’s, viruses and other illnesses.
Long term effects: Fibromyalgia , Candida, Lupus infections.

Integumentary System (Skin)
:
This system includes skin, hair and nails. This system serves as a barrier against infection and injury.
Short term effect: stress can cause hair loss, brittle nails, and even acne.

Long term effects: chronic skin disorders, inability to heal wounds properly, skin infections and premature aging.

Hormone System:
This system is responsible for growth development, metabolism, and it has a great responsibility to maintain the body’s homeostasis.
Long term effects: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Thyroid problems, and even menstruation irregularities.

Urinary System:
This system includes kidneys, bladder, and urethra. Its job is to remove waste from the body in order to help maintain the body’s homeostasis.

Long term effects: kidney stones, bladder infections, cystitis, and kidney infections.

Skeletal System:
This system includes all the bones, joints and cartilage in the body.
Long term effects: decreased bone density, joint malfunction.

Reproductive System:
This system includes all the sexual organs needed for reproduction.
Short term effects: Stress causes a decrease in libido and can also affect the quality of sexual performance.

Long term effects of stress include: Impotence and Infertility
Hopefully by now, you realize just how stress affects your body and mind and its impact on you and your health. More than anything, you must see the seriousness in taking care of yourself and managing the stress in your life. Stress relief is very important. In Ayurveda, there are very good treatments to Prevent and Cure stress and its related diseases.

Therapies like Shirodhara, Nasya, Basti, along with proper diet, depending upon body type of an individual are proven to be excellent in stress management.

If you are not suffering from any long-term illness, you may try the Stress Relief therapy which will take 90 mins daily for 1st two days and approximately 2 hrs on last day –
1st day – Full body Ayurvedic massage using medicated herbal oil for about 45 mins, followed by 10mins of steam.  It would be advisable to take a shower after the massage, please carry a fresh change of clothes if desired.

2nd day – Shirodhara – Head and neck massage followed by Dhara.  Dhara is a process of pouring of medicated herbal oil, decoction or medicated buttermilk in a systematic Ayurvedic method.

3rd day – Both Full body massage and Shirodhara.

AYURVEDA FOR DIABETES

World Health Organization projects that by 2015 the number of diabetic patients will increase threefold than present and diabetic fatalities are likely to increase by more than 50% in the next 10 years in the absence of urgent action.

What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to make proper use of glucose resulting in hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and glycosuria (sugar in urine). Diabetes Mellitus is known to Ayurveda from Vedic period onwards by the name Prameh. Ayurvedic System of Medicine clearly defines this disease and its line of treatment.

Causes of Diabetes :–
1] Excess use of diet increasing kapha dosha such as sugar, fats, potatoes, rice etc
2] Lack of exercise.
3] Mental stress and strain.
4] Excessive sleep etc.

Ayurvedic classification of Diabetes ( prameha ) 4 major types:-
1] Kapha type (again divided into 10 types)
2] Pitta type (again divided into 6 types)
3] Vata type (divided into 4 types)
4] Juvenile diabetes for children (from unhealthy practices of parents and/or due to the sins of past-birth).

All forms of diabetes not treated, eventually develop into Madhumeha (Diabetes Melitus).

Prodormal symptoms:

  1. Profuse sweating
  2. Foul smell of the body
  3. Looseness in the body
  4. Feeling of lethargy
  5. Feeling of some thing coated on eyes
  6. Sensation of coated tongue
  7. Heaviness of body parts
  8. Dryness of throat
  9. Sweet taste in mouth
  10. Burning sensation of palms
  11. Burning sensation of soles
  12. Sweetness of urine

Symptoms:

  1. Excessive & Frequent urination
  2. Increased appetite
  3. Excessive Thirst
  4. Sweet taste in mouth
  5. Weight Loss
  6. Blurry Vision
  7. Wounds that take time to heal
  8. Skin Infections
  9. Unexplained extreme fatigue, etc.

Ayurvedic Management of Diabetes:-

Ayurvedic system is able to treat this problem very effectively. In Ayurveda the line of treatment of Diabetes is strictly on individuals Constitution.

The lean Patients of Diabetes Mellitus {Vattaja prameha} with generalized weakness are advised to have medication & diet which increases dhathus ie .bodily tissues in the body

The obese diabetic patient with optimal body strength having intense Increase of doshas, Purification of the body is advocated, This is dependent on dosha Predominance {Kaphaja are adviced to have emetics, Pittaja are advised to have purgation }.

1] Shodhana (purification therapies):
In strong prameha patients, but with increased doshas, shodhana treatment is prescribed like

A} Vamanam (Emesis therapy)
B} Virechanam (Purgation therapy)
C} Basti (Medicated Enema) only in specific conditions.

2] Shamanam: In the lean diabetic patient treatment is given with the help of different  natural medications.

3] Proper diet regime.

4] Yoga, Meditation.

Diabetes is not just a lack of insulin. Its most probable cause is poor maintenance of body. By taking consideration of purification therapies, medicines, diet, exercise and stress management one can deal with this life threatening disease.
